Janice Small: Young Engineers and Scientists wanted please – oh, and there’s money in it for you ….
This week, PPC Janice Small was invited to attend the launch of The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineering Fair. Launched in the House of Commons, ahead of its fair in Manchester in March, Janice was invited to meet the sponsors who support young people interested in a career in the field of design, engineering or science.
Janice met representatives from Rolls Royce, Shell, Siemens and others who sponsor young people to help them through A levels and ultimately to secure a good university place and a job with leading UK companies.
Janice, a firm believer that our country needs scientists and engineers, actively promotes children pursuing careers in these fields. She said, “My business is media but the last thing we need is more media graduates as we just don’t have the jobs! We need scientists and engineers. There are thousands of vacancies with excellent salaries. Our children should be inspired to be the next Isambard Brunel or the team that heads up our next generation of nuclear power stations. Our future prosperity is dependent upon engaging the most talented of our young people and I would like to see Batley and Spen children have these opportunities”.
Help is on hand for Batley and Spen schools in the form of scholarships. The charity, Arkwright Scholarships, helps children and schools identify those children who may benefit from a career in these areas and sponsors them with an £1800 grant. Heckmondwike Grammar School has taken part in this scheme and Arkwright is inviting other Batley and Spen schools to take advantage of their scholarships.
If you are a parent, child or teacher, please contact Janice for more information on janice4batley@aol.com as Arkwright would like to offer Batley and Spen children the chance to apply for scholarships.
Editors’ notes:
In the last 9 years the Arkwright scholarship Trust’s reputation for identifying talented and committed 15/16 year old students to encourage into engineering, technology, maths and science has grown.
The Trust has just signed up to the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (UKRC) CEO Charter. The Charter aims to encourage diversity in the workforce and is a visible commitment from businesses and organisations within science, engineering and technology to implement positive culture change.
586 Schools are now affiliated and 100 sponsors support Scholarships. The cost of supporting a Scholar is still only £1800 over two years, a level maintained over the last 5 years.
