Janice Small: Thank you Gordon Brown for the BNP
Janice Small, commenting on the BNP’s victory in the European elections:
“Thanks to Gordon Brown, Batley and Spen now has a BNP member representing us in Brussels.
“One thing that should shock Labour more than anything else - yesterday's two BNP victories. I don't say this lightly but I blame Labour for the rise of the BNP. I blame Brown for creating Nick Griffin. I blame Labour for its failure to control Britain's borders... for promising a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty and reneging on that promise... for a failure to get to grips with Islamic extremism... and for a failure to tackle the social causes of poverty. There were no BNP councillors and no MEPs in 1997 when Labour entered office.
“The British National Socialist Party – they are not right wing as the media often mislead, has flourished - and now, to cap it all, the British taxpayer will be funding these bigots for the next five years, thanks to the European Union.
“There was a voter backlash at the Euro polling booths, something that we in mainstream politics have to counteract. The BNP thrives on hatred and division in our communities and their platform will be extremely destructive for Britain, particularly in Batley and Spen where we have a high Muslim population. And if we want to counter British National Socialism then all of us in this community must work together.
“Please remember the rise of Nazi Germany. When US Supreme Court judge Felix Frankfurter was told in 1942 about the death camps by the young Pole Jan Karski, he said “I did not say the young man was lying. I said that I am unable to believe him. There is a difference." Biased reporting in the media will not help. Let’s be clear, this is National Socialism, not extreme right wing policies
Editors’ notes:
The BNP are the far right on the authoritarian/libertarian scale, but left-wing on the economic scale which is not used by most political commentators.
Their position on the economic scale places them squarely in Old Labour territory and explains where they make their gains.
ather than using 'left/right', it might be a lot more useful to frame them as the 'national socialist BNP'. The public inherently understand that the word 'socialist' places them in Labour not Conservative territory
