Janice Small: Batley and Spen citizens don’t feel criminal justice system is on their side

As the Conservative Party today launches the crime section of the 'Mending our Broken Society 'chapter of the Conservative Party’s draft manifesto, Janice Small said: “On the doorsteps in January we have been asking people what they would most like to change about Britain. Canvassing in Batley East, Heckmondwike and Cleckheaton, the message is overwhelming, “More police on the streets, enforce prison sentences with no early release and reduce crime and anti-social behaviour”.

“People up and down this country are hugely frustrated with our criminal justice system. They feel that it’s just not on their side anymore. We can’t go on like this. Our proposed changes would put law back on the side of the citizen and get rid of some of the things that make law-abiding people so unhappy”.

  • The police tell me they want to be released from paperwork, out of the police station and on the streets – it will happen
  • My think tank, Direct Democracy, proposed directly elected police chiefs. We will get them. This means that the police will be accountable to the local communities they serve, not the Home Secretary, and local people will decide police priorities
  • Parents tell me that they worry about under-age drinking. We will give police and local authorities stronger powers over licensing, double the fine for under-age alcohol sales, a tax on super-strength beers, ciders and alcopops and a ban on supermarkets selling alcohol below price
  • We will strengthen the powers for police to stop and search to reduce knife crime and drug dealing
  • Householders worry about intervening if their house is broken into. We will give householders’ greater protection if they have to defend themselves against intruders. ENDS
