Leeds Utd and Janice Kick Off After School Clubs

Don’t sit on the sidelines, let's start after school clubs

PPC for Batley and Spen Janice Small, visited Leeds Utd’s Learning Zone at Elland Road to discuss with leaders, Mick Ferguson and Alan Scorfield (pictured), how they could help young people in Batley and Spen

Janice learnt how the Learning Zone helped hard-to-reach teenagers and how they hope to role out the scheme to young children from Year 9 upwards through after-school clubs.

Janice said: “Mike and Alan are doing a brilliant job with very little funding. They are reaching out to teens who have been excluded from school, some with very difficult home lives, who, for the first time are treated with respect and flourish in this upbeat, grown-up, can-do atmosphere.”

The young people gain qualifications in coaching and leadership, ICT, literacy and numeracy which count towards GCSEs, and many then go onto college, which they would not have done before.

Janice added: “This is the sort of community programme that works and under a Conservative Government would receive funding. I will be inviting the Shadow Ministers for Sport and Culture to visit and look forward to working with Mike and Alan to extend their community programme to schools in Batley and Spen as the younger we reach children the earlier we can help them”.
