Conservatives support the 'Save Norristhorpe Green Belt' Campaign

Janice Small, PPC for Batley and Spen and Kirklees council candidate for Heckmondwike, Robert Thornton, both oppose the proposed eco development in Norristhorpe.

They have visited the site and spoken to locals at length regarding the one year old campaign led by local resident Lisa Drake.

Janice and Robert agree: "Our green spaces are precious to us and must be preserved for future generations: no-one wants to live in one massive conglomeration of townships. We look forward to a Conservative-controlled Kirklees where decisions are taken at a local level to benefit our residents, not central Government imposing unsuitable housing and numbers upon us. Whilst we do not oppose an eco-development in principle, we do not agree that our green belt in Norristhorpe is the appropriate site and are happy to work with the developer to find a more suitable location.”

Speaking in support, local resident and campaigner Marlene Day of Elm Tree Close said “We are delighted that Robert and Janice are supporting our campaign against urban sprawl and all local areas merging into one huge concrete mass because once the plans get approved, where will it stop? We are also concerned about wildlife and nature locally and our children need some green areas.”

Robert added, “I am appalled that the campaign has received no support whatsoever from any of the three local councillors or indeed Shahid Malik MP, they are selling Norristhorpe down the river.”

The Labour Government has decreed that Kirklees must build 37,000 more houses in the next two decades, which will inevitably lead to the erosion of our precious green spaces.

Janice said, “Our green spaces are our lungs and our children’s future, once you’ve lost them, they’re gone forever”.

A Conservative Government will scrap the imposition of these monstrous housing targets on local authorities and they will also scrap regional government and let local councils take decisions on housing and planning.
