Janice is supporting the APPG against Trafficking of Women and Children
I write on behalf of the Officers of the APPG to ask you to help draw attention to the evils of Human Trafficking. This crime encompasses sexual exploitation, debt bondage, domestic slavery and the exploitation of children.
Politics does matter and politicians can make a huge difference. Over 200 years ago, William Wilberforce campaigned against the British Slave Trade for two decades before the Slave Trade Act was passed in 1807. 26 years passed before his campaigning resulted in the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 which put an end to slavery in the British Empire. 203 years later, more than twice as many people are in bondage in the world today as were taken in chains during the entire 350 years of the African Slave Trade, with over 100,000 of these in Europe, more than 1 in 8 in the United Kingdom. Many are children.
Cases of Human Trafficking have recently been reported in Worthing, Northampton, Ipswich, Dundee, Birmingham, Plymouth, Exeter, Colchester, Nottingham, Belfast, Edinburgh, Morecambe Beach, Paignton and London.
I believe Trafficking is a crime against humanity as well as an affront to basic human dignity. It is also a drain on the British Taxpayer with related benefit fraud recently being uncovered on a large scale in one London Borough alone.
Our Group is recognised as one of the most effective campaigning parliamentary groups, with a track record of real achievement. Whilst it has made progress in raising awareness of Human Trafficking within Parliament through debates, meetings and regular questions, unfortunately we have only scratched the surface of the problem nationwide .
